Butterfly Farm Tours

The Triangle’s ultimate butterfly experience
Come tour the only working butterfly farm in North Carolina’s capital region.
Located at 3010 Cotten Road, Raleigh, between Garner and Fuquay-Varina in southern Wake County, Butterfly Lady’s Butterfly Farm is a pleasure to see and experience.

Each of the hour-long Butterfly Farm Tours starts with a 20-minute presentation by Suzanne that demonstrates the wonderful butterfly life cycle, highlights major differences between butterflies and moths, and answers your questions about butterfly gardening and fun.

Then half the farm tour guests go with Suzanne into the Butterfly House to feed and interact with the butterflies. It’s perfectly fine to touch the butterflies and she will teach you the gentle, proper way to wrangle them. Butterflies fly all around you. Some even land on you if you’re quiet and still. Meanwhile, the other half of the farm tour guests enjoy a behind-the-scenes demonstration of the commercial butterfly farm operation on the back-porch classroom taught by Butterfly Lady’s husband and helper, David. To enhance the Butterfly Farm Tour experience, guests are limited to a maximum of 30 in each tour. After 15 minutes, the two groups switch places.

At the end of the Butterfly Farm Tour, there’s ample time for butterfly questions and answers, fun shopping in Butterfly Lady's Farm Store. (caterpillars, chrysalises and cages, oh my!) and a final look at the butterflies.

Supports science competency goals
As with her classroom presentations, Butterfly Lady’s farm tours solidly support
objectives of Second Grade Science Competency Goal 1 as defined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction:
• 1.01 Describe the life cycle of animals including birth, developing into an adult, reproducing, aging and death.
• 1.02 Observe that insects need food, air, and space to grow.
• 1.03 Observe the different stages of an insect life cycle.

But you don’t have to be a second grader to love the Butterfly Farm Tour. Kids (and kids at heart) of all ages are entertained and delighted by the colorful creatures on Butterfly Lady’s Farm.

Making butterfly science fun
Having taught elementary school for 28 years,
Suzanne naturally brings the joy of butterflies to her students. Over the years, thousands of children have experienced the fun of butterflies and have gained a greater appreciation and respect for nature and its beauty with her classes, school presentations and now her Butterfly Farm Tours.
